"'You see him all the time at work, and you share, and you don't fight. Why *can't* you get married?'

'Will...'

"I like John!"

'I know you do, sweetie,' she said. 'But John and I are not going to get married.'

'But how do you know?'

'Will, I know.' She sighed. 'To get married, you have to feel something special about the other person, something more than you feel about someone who's just your friend. . .I think you just love them more than you've ever loved anyone else,' she said. . . .

He didn't say anything, just cozied up against her, resting his head in his mom's lap. He let her stroke his hair, so still and so quiet that he could almost fall asleep.

'Is that why you didn't marry my dad?
